In Mexican border towns, the army has been called out to protect the police from drug cartels. Three high ranking police officers have been ambushed in Juárez in two days. One survived, barely.
Posted by Walter at January 23, 2008 07:04 AMIs the Army protecting the cartels from the police? In 1992 I was in Juarez enjoying adult beverages and the scenery (non-donkey related) and afterward was stopped and shaken down by local police. A quick dive into my wallet produced President Grant and I was allowed to vacate the country of Mexico.
If the Mexican government really wanted to protect its police, it would send its army after the cartels, but there's too much money involved.
The next time the drug lords have their soldiers firing weapons into Texas, I would be very surprised if Gov. Perry doesn't send in the Texas Rangers in there to kick the ever living shit out of them again. Call me reactive, fine. But I have had it with the impotent Mexican government, their people deserve better.
Yes, the Mexican people deserve better, but the truth is, as there is a crackdown on the narcos, they attack the politicians, law enforcement, legal system. We watched this happen as we lived in Colombia in the 70's and 80's and pray that the Mexico is protected from the same complete disintegration that Colombia is trying to climb out of.
