What's that smell? Is it these people? Ugh. Soap, anyone?
Wait 'til my agent hears from me.
I really liked this one.
Posted by: mother-in-law in Spring at September 1, 2004 04:27 PMDo you have that new Smell-TTL protocol?
Really, Walter, with all due respect, talk about being content-free....
(Incidentally, if you can hang out outside in NYC in August and not perspire, please let me know your secret.)
Posted by: Gary Farber at September 3, 2004 06:14 PMJeez, two + years of blogging and I tell one dumb joke...
Posted by: Walter at September 3, 2004 06:23 PMHey, I'm hardly in any position to criticize people for making dumb jokes, and that's not what I was doing.
I'm just -- and this may be because it sailed over my head -- not understanding what the basis here was, beyond something like "ha, ha, Michael Moore is fat!" (And you presumably have read enough of my posts on MM to know that I have no respect for him -- but not on the basis of his looks.) Or... I just don't get why these folks particularly "smell" (beyond that, as I alluded, in point of fact pretty much everyone in NYC in August does, in fact, smell; I don't advise venturing into the subway stations in summer if you're sensitive).
The fact that it plays into the dullest of cliches -- "haha, those hippies shure do smell!" -- makes it only seem more pointless, but, as I said, it's possible I'm missing the joke entirely. Either way, no biggie.
Posted by: Gary Farber at September 3, 2004 07:59 PMYou know the joke's a failure when you find yourself explaining it.
I thought the expressions on their faces were comical, somewhere around annoyance and disgust, as if the celebrities were dismayed to find themselves in the company of the little people.
