But Bush might pick up some votes from the fishing industry. Can anyone tell me why a libertarian might want to vote for him?
Posted by Walter at July 8, 2004 01:35 PMSo how many shrimp farmers might benefit from this? a couple of thousand maybe, versus how many americans who eat shrimp? This is a form of welfare wealth redistribution, and as a person who eats shrimp on a somewhat regular basis, it pisses me off. Bush only removed the steel tariffs after the WTO put pressure on him. For a president who claims to be a tax cutter, he sure seems to be raising taxes in a lot of hidden ways, like increasing tarriffs and user fees.
Posted by: severin at July 9, 2004 04:16 PMSure, I'll give you a reason. We're in a war and the Democrat candidate doesn't understand the nature of it and will screw it up, costing many lives and the Libertarian candidate is in denial about the nature of the conflict and isn't giving a proper alternative that I could be proud to vote for. He'll cost lots of lives too.
Compared to that, a few pennies on the cost of shrimp is just... small.
The Islamist end goal is to put fear into us until we bow our heads and bend our knees just to get on with our lives. Here's a very practical test of our freedom. When it's safe to make a movie as respectful of traditional islam about Mohammed as The Last Temptation of Christ is about traditional christianity, our freedoms will no longer be under threat by muslims.
Right now, nobody would fund such a project because they don't want to die. Theater owners wouldn't screen a project like this because they don't want their business firebombed. The style of warfare being used by the muslims was abandoned by Europe after the 30 Years War made a mess of the continent, exhausting more than a generation. We need somebody with the guts to go against 350 years of precedent and say that we're at war with the terrorists. For that we've only got GWB in this electoral cycle.
Posted by: TM Lutas at July 13, 2004 01:26 PMI'm not convinced that Kerry's strategy in the war will be any less effective than GW's, whether he understands the conflict or not.
Posted by: Walter at July 13, 2004 06:03 PMKerry is a Clinton wannabe. He has no strategy. He's simply saying what people want to hear.
Possible the best reason to vote for Bush. He doesn't tell people what they want to hear.
