...when a really dumb idea comes up in a legislature children are somehow involved?
This time some high school kids are proposing a six cent tax on every plastic grocery bag. Note the fawning media coverage here, here, and especially here.
This is the worst kind of legislative action, managing to be simultaneously trivial, banal, and completely anti-liberty.

Such a steep tax on plastic shopping bags will be a terrible burden on the homeless...
I guess the homeless would be able to get jobs as plastic bag inventory auditors for the state, to make sure no tax scofflaws are dealing in black market shopping bags.
I think the presence of auditory hallucinations would be a plus for a state bag auditor.
Let there be no illegal black market or Sunflower Market bags.
Force the remaining homeless buy canvas bags to carry their scrap aluminum cans!
Walter, I just wanted to shout an amen at that last line.
So, you know, amen.
Which seems really anticlimactic now.
Walter,
It's actually a 3 cent tax to fund education and 3 cents to the merchant.

If the little numbskulls had also demanded a "deforestation tax" of, say, 5 cents a bag on paper bags, and "reparations tax" of 7 cents on cotton bags, they would be front running candidates for the House and Senate.
